Famously caught attempting to assassinate King James I during the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605, Guy (or Guido) Fawkes was imprisoned and tortured at the Tower of London.
In 1606, James I passed a thanksgiving act celebrating the failure of the Gunpowder Plot and his deliverance from danger with bonfires and fireworks. Bonfire Night celebrations take place on 5 November to this day, with people gathering to burn effigies of Guy.
